Genetic Basis of Bilateral Breast Cancers

We are currently recruiting patients to participate in a study regarding the genetic basis of bilateral breast cancer. The purpose of this study is to identify one (or more) gene(s) that may be responsible for bilateral breast cancer.

Who Can Participate?

  • Participation in this study is completely voluntary
  • Women who have been diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer, with the first diagnosis under the age of 65
  • Have had genetic testing for the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes (can be positive or negative for a mutation)
  • Participants can reside outside of Canada

** if participants have not had BRCA1 or 2 genetic testing but meet other criteria need to speak with a research coordinator/genetic counselor before enrolling in this study**

Why Should I Participate?
Your participation may help us identify one (or more) gene(s) that may cause hereditary bilateral breast cancer. A study population may help us also identify genetic and non-genetic factors that may cause bilateral breast cancer and may provide information about bilateral breast cancer to women in the future, giving them an opportunity to make better decisions about their health.

What Does Participation Entail?
To participate, all we need you:

  • Provide your family history of cancer (anonymized pedigree)
  • Give us permission to obtain your medical records of your bilateral breast cancer
  • Complete a questionnaire
  • Provide a saliva or blood sample

** Depending on where you reside, participants may not need to come to our clinic to participate in this study**
