Purpose:
We would like to see if there is a potential for oral DIM (Diindolylmethane) supplementation to result in the increased production of the BRCA1 protein in BRCA1 mutation carriers.
Why Participate?
The risk of breast and ovarian cancer in carriers of a BRCA1 mutation might be lowered by some nutritional supplements. For example, green tea, broccoli and vitamin D are of potential interest. One dietary supplement that is thought to have potential for BRCA1 carriers is DIM, which is an active ingredient in broccoli and other green vegetables. DIM - is found in vegetables like broccoli and is available as a supplement in health food stores. We think that DIM may increase the production of the normal copy of BRCA1 and offset the effect of the mutation. If so, this pilot study may enable us to perform a larger study in order to confirm that there is a potential for prevention of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer with oral DIM supplementation.
Who Can Participate?
Participation in this study is completely voluntary.
To Participate:
To participate please contact the Research Associate to receive a study package that includes a consent form and brief questionnaire. We estimate that the questionnaire should take about 10 minutes to complete. The Research Assistant will contact you to book an appointment. Your appointment will take place in our study centre on the seventh floor of 790 Bay Street. It will take approximately 20 minutes. A blood sample (20cc) will be taken from you when you come into our clinic and a urine sample (20cc), collected by you at home, will be provided to us. You may stop participation at any time.
If you do not carry a BRCA1 mutation but come from BRCA1 carrier family (a family with at least one individual that has tested positive for a BRCA1 mutation): you simply need to come in once to provide us with a blood and urine sample. You will not be asked to take DIM.
If you are a BRCA1 mutation carrier: you will need to provide us with a blood and a urine samples at your first clinic visit and sometime during the six weeks of DIM supplementation (after 4-6 weeks of your first clinic visit).
You may decide whether or not to receive DIM supplements. If you choose to take DIM you will be asked to take 300mg per day of Rx Balance BioResponse DIM supplements for six weeks. You will be given the supplements free of charge when you come into our clinic.
