Research and Academic Interests:
Dr. Levitt's has helped created a comprehensive program of clinical women's health research at Women's College focusing on three primary areas: trauma treatment, reproductive life stages and the intersections between mental and physical health. His own research program primarily consists of clinical trials in postpartum depression and in conditions that are more commonly experienced by women than men such as major depression, seasonal depression and thyroid illness. Dr. Levitt has recently evaluated gender issues in the presentation of depression and suicidality in community samples, and the impact of gender on the occurrence of co-morbid bipolar disorder and substance abuse. His team has also been involved in evaluating the potential role of folate and one carbon metabolites in mood regulation and in studies of daily mood variability in women.
Dr. Levitt has been a central part of many of the studies shaping our understanding of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and its treatment (seasonal depression occurs predominantly in mid-life women). He was involved in the first ever published double-blind placebo controlled trial of antidepressants in SAD and the largest study ever to compare different light intensities for treatment. He is currently involved in a light vs. medication trial.
