Dr. Dennis contributes expertise in The Lancet Series on Perinatal Mental Health

December 2014

Perinatal mental healthIn November 2014, The Lancet published a series on perinatal mental health that examined various types of mental illness in the perinatal and postpartum period and the effects of these disorders on the fetus and child.

Cindy-Lee Dennis, PhD, Shirley Brown Chair in Women’s Mental Health Research at Women’s College Hospital, was a contributing author who provided expertise on psychosocial and psychological interventions for the prevention and treatment of postpartum depression. She also shared her insights on managing anxiety.

Dennis conducts research that is focused on providing effective care to women and families impacted by postpartum depression. Most recently, she tested an innovative telephone-based interpersonal psychotherapy for the treatment of postpartum depression. Preliminary results have shown that it is effective, and soon New York City will be piloting it across the city for depressed mothers.
