Clinician-scientist recognized for work on trauma care

February 2016

Dr. Catherine ClassenWomen’s College Hospital (WCH) psychologist and scientist Dr. Catherine Classen, PhD, was recently recognized by the University of Toronto’s (U of T) faculty of medicine for her ongoing work on psychological trauma.

Dr. Classen was recognized at the 2015 Research Awards reception, held on December 10, 2015 at the Vivian & David Campbell Conference Facility at U of T. A select group of faculty members who had recently been the recipients of international and national awards and honours were celebrated at the awards reception. They will also be featured on posters that will be displayed in the university’s medical sciences building on rotation throughout the year.

Dr. Classen was noted for the “boundless impact” she has made through her research on psychological trauma, including her research on interventions for women who have experienced interpersonal trauma, as well as her efforts to advance trauma-informed care within the healthcare system. Her research also aims to design effective interventions that reach underserved populations through non-traditional avenues.

“I’m honoured to receive this recognition from the University of Toronto’s faculty of medicine,” said Dr. Classen. “It is vital that we strive to improve the quality of care for trauma survivors through research and knowledge exchange. Having my work recognized in this way is one more opportunity to raise awareness of this important issue.”

This ended a very exciting year for Dr. Classen, who was promoted to full professor in the department of psychiatry, inducted as a fellow of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation and named psychologist of the year by the Traumatic Stress Section of the Canadian Psychological Association.
