WCRI scientist leads national consensus statement on HIV

October 2014

Dr. Mona LoutfyEarlier this year, Dr. Mona Loutfy led a team of experts to publish a consensus statement on HIV transmission in the context of the law that was endorsed by more than 70 Canadian physicians and medical researchers and the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Canada.

“The main purpose of our consensus statement was to provide clear information for crowns, judges and other legal professionals regarding the science of HIV, its implications, and its risk of transmission in a legal context,” says Loutfy.

Loutfy and her team summarized the most relevant and reliable medical and scientific evidence related to HIV and HIV transmission and treatment. The statement was published in the Canadian Journal of Infectious Diseases & Medical Microbiology and received extensive coverage by media outlets across Canada, including CBC and CTV News.

“It was important for us to publish this consensus statement because we came together as physicians and scientists to stand up for something that we thought was important for our patients and for Canadians to know about,” says Loutfy.
