WCRI scientists present internationally

Spring 2017

The International Congress on Cancer Prevention and Early Detection in Tehran, Iran, invited Dr. Mohammad R. Akbari, a scientist at WCRI, to present Jan. 29. Dr. Akbari presented the talk, “Population-Based Genetic Testing for Cancer.” Dr. Akbari believes that the reduction in the cost of genetic testing in recent years will allow universal genetic testing for cancer to become a reality in the near future. The congress was held in collaboration with the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Big-Data and Health were on the agenda at a workshop in Israel Jan. 23 and 24, held jointly by Tel Aviv University and the University of Toronto. Dr. Lorraine Lipscombe, a scientist at WCRI, was invited to present her talk “Harnessing big data from healthcare systems for health research.” She discussed uses for the increasing sources of data that are becoming available to health researchers and the strengths and limitations of databases in Ontario. Dr. Lipscombe made connections with doctors, scientists and computer scientists in Israel with an interest in this type of research.
