Dr Nicholas Pimlott is clinical researcher and physician in the Family Practice Health Centre of Women's College Hospital. Dr. Pimlott is also an assistant professor in the department of family and community medicine at the University of Toronto. He has received several teaching awards for his work with medical students.
Research and Academic Interests:
Dr. Pimlott has been involved in a number of studies exploring and assessing
the role of family physicians over his time at the Family Practice Health
Centre. Currently, his primary research interest is in exploring and
understanding the role of the family physician in providing care for patients
and families with dementia. He is part of an ongoing qualitative study
conducting focus groups with family physicians to explore their awareness and
use of clinical guidelines for dementia care and, more broadly, the challenges
they face in caring for persons with dementia. Another study, "Pathways to
Diagnosis", will explore, using qualitative and quantitative methods, how
patients from different cultural communities interact with the health care
system (and family physicians in particular) when they develop dementia.
Dr. Pimlott is also conducting research to assess how family physicians assess and manage common sleep problems in the elderly in collaboration with his colleague, Dr. Brian Murray. This work is a continuation of his long-standing interest in benzodiazepine prescribing to the elderly and its relationship to the management of insomnia.
