Dr. Pamela Morgan is a professor of anesthesia at the University of Toronto and a consultant anesthesiologist at Women's College Hospital. She is chair of the obstetrics section of the Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society and co-chair of the Society's Patient Safety Committee.
Research and Academic Interests
Dr. Morgan's primary area of interest is educational research using simulation
technology. Simulation technology uses computer-controlled systems and devices
to facilitate medical education while protecting patient safety by enabling
medical students, residents and practicing clinicians to learn treatment
protocols and master procedure skills before using them in a clinical
environment. Her work aims to develop standardized, valid and reliable methods
of testing medical competence.
Dr. Morgan's earlier work focused on the use of simulation for undergraduate education and evaluation. Specifically these studies examined the validity and reliability of simulation-based assessments and the efficacy of high-fidelity simulation as an educational tool. Most recently, she has been involved as primary investigator in research examining 1) the use of simulation-based education to decrease human error in the peri-operative period and 2) the use of high-fidelity simulation to determine human factors involving medical teams which may affect patient safety.
