Dr. Gillian Hawker is the physician-in-chief of the department of medicine at Women's College Hospital, where she holds the F.M. Hill Chair in Academic Women's Medicine. She directs the Canadian Osteoarthritis Research Program at Women's College Hospital.
Dr. Hawker is a professor in the faculty of medicine at the University of Toronto and in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation. She is also a core investigator with the Arthritis Community Research and Evaluation Unit at the University Health Network and a senior adjunct scientist at the Institute for Clinical and Evaluative Sciences. Dr. Hawker recently received a Senior Distinguished Research Investigator Award from the Arthritis Society of Canada.
Dr. Hawker's research focuses on two common musculoskeletal diseases of aging: osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Her research in osteoporosis largely focuses on studies that elucidate risk factors for lack of attainment or maintenance of peak bone mass in young adults. Her osteoarthritis research is focused on examining disparity in access to osteoarthritis care. She is currently funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to investigate the determinants of arthritis disability and time to total joint replacement in a population-based cohort of individuals with arthritis, and to examine the determinants and consequences of pain and fatigue in osteoarthritis.
