Atkinson Chair in Women's Health Research

In 1997, an endowment from the Atkinson Charitable Foundation created the Atkinson Chair in Women's Health Research. A partnership between the Centre for Research in Women's Health and the University of Toronto, it was the first chair of its kind in Canada. The initial chair recipient was Dr. Berit Schei, a gynecologist and epidemiologist from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Dr. Schei's distinguished body of work focused on violence against women during pregnancy and the assault of women war refugees.

When Dr. Schei returned to Europe in 1999, the Atkinson Charitable Foundation generously agreed to continue its support of research on violence against women by supporting the Violence and Health Research Program of WCRI.
