Dr. Narod and colleagues awarded largest grant ever to study breast cancer in young women

October 2014

Dr. Steven NarodIn June 2014, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research–Institute for Cancer Research announced a $5.7 million investment to support a pan-Canadian research program led by Dr. Steven Narod to investigate breast cancer in young women.

Dr. Narod is a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Breast Cancer at Women’s College Hospital.  The program will be co-led by Dr. May Lynn Quan (University of Calgary) and it will support four sub-projects led by Dr. Kelly Metcalfe (adjunct scientist at WCRI), Dr. Nancy Baxter (St. Michael’s Hospital), Dr. Ellen Warner (Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre), and Dr. Christine Friedenreich (University of Calgary).

The newly funded program aims to better understand the unique biology of breast cancer in women under the age of 40 and its implications for prevention, risk reduction and delivering care. This research could lead to significant changes in clinical practice and policy, as well as enable women to make more informed decisions about their lives during and after breast cancer.
