Women’s College Research Institute presents best paper and mentorship awards to faculty

May 2014

On March 26, 2014, Women’s College Research Institute (WCRI) held its 5th Annual Research Paper Presentations and Mentorship Awards Ceremony.

“The event was an opportunity to showcase the work of our scientists and trainees and how their research is improving the way patients are cared for and how care is delivered,” says Dr. Paula Rochon, Vice-President, Research, Women’s College Hospital.

Every year since 2010, WCRI scientists and trainees have submitted their best papers published in the previous year to WCRI’s annual best research paper competition. An external scientific committee reviews the submissions and chooses the most outstanding paper in the scientist and trainee categories.

Dr. An-Wen Chan, Phelan scientist at WCRI, was presented with the best paper award in the scientist category, for his work on the SPIRIT initiative to improve the quality and efficiency of clinical trials. In the trainee category, Dr. Jacob Udell, research fellow at WCRI, received the best paper award for his research on the influenza vaccine and its effect on reducing cardiovascular disease.

A mentorship award was also presented to Dr. Steven Narod, Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Breast Cancer at WCRI, who for years has demonstrated commitment to mentoring the next generation of researchers.
