Campaign to improve clinical trials a success

November 2013

Dr. An-Wen ChanWomen’s College Phelan Scientist Dr. An-Wen Chan is making scientists rethink research. He chairs the SPIRIT (Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Interventional Trials) group, an international panel of experts that aims to improve the quality and efficiency of clinical trials. The group’s work is essential, given that doctors rely on clinical trials to practice medicine.

Earlier this year, Chan led the SPIRIT group to develop and publish a 33-item checklist to guide scientists through the planning of their trials. Already, the checklist has received worldwide attention and acclaim. The SPIRIT website has received over 50,000 page views since its launch in January 2013.  Over 25 organizations around the world have endorsed SPIRIT as part of their clinical trial policies, and over 70 medical journals have introduced policies recommending that submitted trial protocols adhere to SPIRIT.
