Ensuring that women across the province have equal access to specialized health services, especially when it comes to their reproductive health, is fundamental to their overall well-being. Women’s College Hospital has a long legacy of supporting women’s reproductive health needs and continues to offer an array of services to women to support them through their reproductive years.
At Women’s College Research Institute, we are addressing the complexity of effectively delivering reproductive health services that are impacted by science, sociocultural issues and politics. Our scientist are leading efforts to enhance access to abortion services across Canada, provide up-to-date and accessible information about emergency contraception options and reduce barriers to screening for early breast and ovarian cancer.
Ontario HIV Fertility Program
HIV is increasingly recognized as a chronic and manageable disease, thus pregnancy planning has become an important issue for HIV-positive women of child-bearing age. A growing number of these women wish to start families. We will carry out research in this area that will explore a number of clinical issues including the availability of fertility clinics to assist HIV+ women, the fertility desires of HIV-positive women and best practices for sperm washing and the use of genital secretion HIV viral load testing to help monitor pregnancy.
Dr. Mona Loutfy has recently received funding from the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research (CanFAR) to begin this work.
